Why the climate helps

That steady, mild weather is a real advantage when you are healing, because you can rest comfortably without sweating through your bandages or shivering.

Sun protection at altitude

The altitude is the one thing to respect. At 1,500 meters the sun is stronger than it feels, and ultraviolet light darkens scars and slows how they fade. Keep your face out of direct sun while you heal, wear a wide-brimmed hat outdoors, and use sunscreen once your incisions have closed and your surgeon clears it.

Temperature and comfort

Mornings and evenings run cool, even when midday feels warm. Dress in light layers you can add and remove, and keep a light blanket on hand if you sleep with air conditioning. The goal is to stay comfortable without overheating, because heat and straining can raise your blood pressure.

Hydration and swelling

Drink water through the day. Good hydration helps your body clear swelling and bruising faster, and it keeps you from the headaches that high altitude can bring in the first days. Skip alcohol while you heal, since it dries you out and can raise blood pressure.

Rest, then walk

Mild movement helps circulation and lowers the risk of clots. For the first week that means short, slow walks inside or just outside your room, never in direct sun, and always with your head up and your face protected.
